Approaches to creating sustainability in human systems have both
scientific and societal components. We focus on the social science
of sustainable development and have extracted
both natural and human laws that allow systems to flourish. Sustainable
societal norms are pluralistic, celebrate diversity and participation,
and give members access to information that allow them to learn
and contribute. In our research, we've found that these norms,
if nurtured in organizational cultures, can provide a significant
industry advantage.
Societies are complex systems, and a myriad of cause and effect
dynamics can either create synergies or breakdowns between people
and groups. By using a systems approach to organizational analysis
and problem solving, we acknowledge the importance of the whole,
while focusing our efforts on leverage points -- the root causes
-- that can make the greatest difference to people attempting
to maximize their effectiveness.
